National Grid Recommends Itron for Proposed Advanced Metering Across Massachusetts

Itron aims to provide communication network to support ’Grid Mod’ objectives for up to 1.3 million customers

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — July 26, 2016 — Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI), a world-leading technology and services company dedicated to the resourceful use of energy and water, announced today that National Grid, one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world, serving 3.4 million electricity customers and 3.6 million natural gas customers in New England and New York, has recommended Itron as its Advanced Metering Functionality (AMF) solution provider in Massachusetts.

The utility has proposed use of Itron’s proven OpenWay smart grid platform to meet the AMF objectives of its Grid Modernization Plan in Massachusetts. The OpenWay platform would enable access to near real-time data, outage and restoration notification, two-way communication and control capabilities. AMF will enable Grid Modernization objectives of improved outage management, demand optimization, distributed resource integration, and workforce and asset management. As part of the AMF proposal, Itron would also design and implement a comprehensive communications network and cyber security infrastructure in support of other aspects of National Grid’s proposed Grid Modernization plan. National Grid’s proposal is subject to approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, which ordered the filing of a 10-year Grid Modernization plan consistent with state policy objectives, and subject to National Grid and Itron agreeing on a contract.

Following a successful pilot program in Worcester, Massachusetts, National Grid’s proposal could bring Itron’s smart grid technology to the rest of its 1.3 million customers in Massachusetts. The multi-purpose network, if approved, will support multiple smart grid applications, including grid monitoring, Volt VAR optimization, advanced distribution automation, demand response, distributed generation, theft detection, smart metering and consumer programs. If approved, National Grid will be positioned to enhance the reliability and resiliency of electricity service in the face of increasingly extreme weather, and empower consumers with opportunities to better manage and reduce electricity costs.
