Location Action, Global Impact: Itron’s Earth Day Highlights
While Earth Day is first and foremost a call to action to care for our planet, it’s also a meaningful opportunity to roll up our sleeves, engage with our communities and build stronger connections in the process. Here’s how some of our Itron sites and employees around the world powered purpose into action.
Noida, India
The Itron India office visited the Youth for Seva (YFS) Learning Center, an organization committed to creating a positive impact through volunteerism and various educational programs. To recognize Earth Day, the Itron India site joined YFS in distributing toys, clothes and stationary items to underprivileged children. In collaboration with the Give Me Trees Trust and YWF, the Itron team also planted 150 trees and participated in a seed ball making activity to promote reforestation and environmental awareness.
Oconee, South Carolina, USA
Employees from the Oconee site volunteered with Habitat for Humanity to help build two new homes. According to the organization, Itron volunteers constructed and raised three exterior walls in record time and helped lay the subflooring for a third home.
Austin, Texas
The Austin office made a splash during their fourth annual community-wide lake and land clean up along Lady Bird Lake, benefiting the Trail Conservancy, which is dedicated to protecting, enhancing and connecting the Ann and Roy Butler Trail. Volunteers could collect trash on foot or take to the water by kayak, canoe or paddle board thanks to our friends at Rowing Dock. The event was a massive success, with 1,487 volunteers from across Austin coming together to collect an impressive 6 tons of trash (12,366 lbs.)!
Cork, Ireland
The corporate social responsibility (CSR) team in Cork gifted all employees “Beebombs”—a mix of annuals and perennial wildflowers such as poppies, cornflower and marigolds, to help restore Ireland’s lost wildflower habitats and pollinators. The team also added indoor plants throughout the office to help purify the air and create a greener workspace.
San Jose, California, USA
The San Jose site has a long-standing tradition of celebrating Earth Day, taking action to educate and impact their local community. This year, the site engagement team organized and hosted a clothing and an e-waste drive, recycling several bins of clothing and two pallets of e-waste. Community volunteers also sorted 10,710 pounds of food at Second Harvest food bank and set up an Earth Day station to give away treats and seeds to plant.
Liberty Lake, Washington, USA
The Liberty Lake site came together for the annual Centennial Trail cleanup event, "Unveil the Trail," hosted by Friends of the Centennial Trail. This local non-profit advocates for maintaining and completing the Centennial Trail, a 64-mile National Recreation Trail that connects parks and green spaces throughout the area. Fun fact: Itron has been a proud sponsor of miles two and three of the Centennial Trail since 2001.
From planting trees and cleaning waterways to supporting education and biodiversity, Itron employees demonstrated how small actions, when taken together, create meaningful impact. Earth Day is just one way we live out our commitment to a more resourceful world year-round.
