Traffic Models for GEI & AMI 2.0 in pLTE - Hybrid Network Architectures

AMI 2.0 and Grid Edge Intelligence are fundamentally changing how utility networks behave—driving higher volumes, localized traffic, and tighter performance expectations that traditional AMI architectures were not designed to handle. The question is no longer coverage—it’s how networks scale under real load. This session explores how AMI 2.0 and private LTE combine to form a modern grid platform, grounded in Duquesne Light’s planning experience. Through a joint Itron–Nokia analysis, we compare pure cellular, micro mesh, and hybrid cellular + grid-edge P2P designs, highlighting how each handles evolving traffic demands. We’ll show how innovations like spokesmeters and P2P reduce network strain, unlock capacity headroom, and enable scalable growth—while positioning utilities for a practical evolution toward 5G.
