Glendale Water & Power Completes First Stimulus-Funded Smart Grid Installation
Itron Technology Fully Deployed in Support of Resource Sustainability Efforts
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — September 28, 2011 — Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) is pleased to announce that Glendale Water & Power (GWP), based in southern California, finished deploying an Itron solution in support of its smart metering project in September 2011. GWP was the first utility in the nation to apply for and acquire Department of Energy American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funding, and it is also one of the first to put those funds fully in to use. The project will help Glendale residents better monitor and understand their energy and water usage, and will aid GWP in promoting conservation efforts.
Glendale Water & Power's smart metering project covers its service territory of 120,000 customers and includes Itron smart electricity meters, smart water communication modules, a meter data management system, leak detection technology and customer-facing web portals. The Itron solution is already operating and communicating with back-end systems at the utility. Data collected by the system will soon be used in a pilot program to display consumption information on digital picture frames inside customers' homes.
"Glendale Water & Power's smart metering project helps affirm our commitment to delivering sustainable power and water services to our customers," said Glenn Steiger, general manager at GWP. "Itron's combined technology, experience and support helped create the ideal solution for us and our customers."
The final Itron smart meter of GWP's deployment was installed during a ceremony at Glendale Community College, which was attended by several local and regional dignitaries. With the successful installation, GWP solidifies its position as one of the nation's most progressive utilities.
Mark deVere-White, Itron vice president and managing director, North America, said "We would like to congratulate Glendale Water & Power on the installation of its last smart electricity meter and deployment of its solution. We'd also like to commend Glendale for its vision of sustainable water and energy delivery-thank you for the opportunity to partner with you in this important venture."
