Itron Awarded Contract with Cairns Regional Council for Smart Water Program
Australian Council to Use OpenWay® Riva IoT Solution to Conserve Water and Limit Waste
LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — Nov. 14, 2017 — Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI), a world-leading technology and services company dedicated to the resourceful use of energy and water, and the Cairns Regional Council (CRC) in Australia’s Far North Queensland announced today that they have entered into a contract to modernize CRC’s water distribution system with Itron’s OpenWay Riva IoT solution, including 55,000 Intelis ultrasonic water meters. The solution will create the first-of-its-kind smart water network in Australia to help the council work with their community to reduce excessive water waste.
Using the Itron solution, CRC will allow its customers to access water use data to better manage how they are using water and quickly detect leaks. This will empower residents and businesses to have greater control over their water use and help conserve water. In addition, with smart ultrasonic water meters, the council will have access to information that supports the production of high-quality water and reduction of wastage.
The combination of accurate, robust metering technology and a high-performance network will unlock new capabilities for the council. The OpenWay Riva solution features a unified, highly secure, multi-purpose network for smart water applications and allows smart water meters, network devices and distributed assets to communicate and interact intelligently throughout the network.
More than a standard water metering network, the interoperable network can be used for a range of council requirements, making it a cost-effective and extremely beneficial investment for the community. OpenWay Riva will allow CRC to use a single network for smart metering, water efficiency and system integrity applications. With the collection and analysis of more detailed meter data over the network, CRC can measure water consumption more accurately and detect leaks faster.
“Water is our most valuable resource and the council is committed to reducing wastage at every point of delivery. Itron has the global experience and technology to help us meet this goal. We look forward to benefiting from Itron’s OpenWay Riva IoT solution, which will give us the foundation to better manage our water resources and make a positive step toward our longer-term water security,” said Cr Bob Manning, Mayor of the Cairns Regional Council.
“Itron’s OpenWay Riva IoT solution will give the Cairns Regional Council access to new capabilities for water efficiency while providing the foundation for future smart city applications. With cutting-edge static metering technology and a multi-purpose network, the possibilities are nearly endless for enhanced reliability, reduced water losses and improved customer service and engagement,” said Dominique Lerouge, Itron vice president for Water and Heat in the Asia-Pacific. “We are pleased to be a part of this first-of-its-kind project in Australia, helping conserve water resources and create a more resourceful world.”
