Itron takes leadership role in energy and water technology for smart cities movement; demonstrates energy and water app designed for city leaders

LIBERTY LAKE, Wash.—Nov. 18, 2013—Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) announced today that it will join other Smart Cities Council members at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, Spain from November 19 to 21 to discuss next steps in smart city evolution. In advance of the expo, the Smart Cities Council will unveil the Smart Cities Council Readiness Guide. Comprised of chapters addressing specific city functions-energy, water and wastewater, and finances, among others-the Readiness Guide is an authoritative resource for leaders seeking to transform cities and communities with smarter planning, governance, policy and technology.

To inaugurate the Readiness Guide, the Smart Cities Council will hold a smart cities workshop and press conference at Barcelona's ESADE Business Schoolwith the Institute of Public Governance and Managementon November 18 at 4:00 p.m. CET. The school was chosen for its significant contributions to smart cities research and development. Interested parties can listen to the press conference here.

Itron executives, including Russ Vanos, Itron's senior vice president of strategy and corporate development, will participate in launch activities and panel discussions during the workshop. The panels will consist of partners, advisors and ESADE professors.

"The Smart Cities Council is truly unique. It engages city leaders in a public-private partnership that promotes the long-term stability and sustainability of cities and citizens. The Council is a diverse consortium of industry leaders-from finance and banking, to energy and environmental organizations-that works collaboratively to get the right information into the hands of those who need it," said Vanos.

As a founding member and lead partner of the Smart Cities Council, Itron is contributing its expertise and resources to advance better management of energy and water. With the industry's strongest portfolio of smart grid and smart metering solutions already deployed and operating reliably around the world, Itron will continue to develop technology that combines the best in measurement, communications, data management, analytics and services to meet the challenges facing the world's cities.

In addition, Itron will be demonstrating its Itron Insights App during the expo. Developed in conjunction with Microsoft's CityNext initiative, the Itron Insights App, which is based on Windows 8, provides cities with critical information such as energy costs, water revenue and expenses, and carbon footprint. City leaders will have access to energy and water budgets, baselines and trends, organized according to location and facility type. The dashboard also includes embedded alerts to detect and assess anomalies, as well as task management to coordinate resource optimization efforts. To see the app, visit Itron in Microsoft's booth #D145.

"We've reached out to city leaders to ask, 'what are your most pressing needs and challenges?' Consistently, cities tell us that costs associated with energy, water and building management are high on their list. The Itron Insights App takes data that may have only been seen by utilities and gets it in front of decision makers who can use it for planning and policy decisions," said Roberto Aiello with Itron's CTO Office.
