The New Challenges on Water Resources

Essential to all living things, water is a natural resource that human activities too often negatively impact. In order to preserve water and make it accessible, mankind needs to take action.

YOUR WHITE PAPER: THE NEW CHALLENGES ON WATER RESOURCES - HOW WE MANAGE WATER IMPACTS US ALL

If water cannot be created, conserving and recycling is ever more critical

Water management is a major issue facing most European territories. Being directly responsible for water supplies, management of aquatic environments and the control of the sanitation of municipalities, elected officials will be called upon to mobilize within the framework of governance and water policy. This report on the world’s water resources provides insights regarding consumption, challenges and investment across Europe. Additionally it provides some approaches for how we can address improved management of this precious resource.

Key Stats

European tap water consumption

For the price of a bottle of mineral water, you have the equivalent of 700 liters of tap water. On December 15, 2020, the European Parliament presented an agreement reached with the European Council aimed at increasing consumer confidence and the use of tap water for drinking. According to the new rules, European Member States must improve access to drinking water for all, especially for vulnerable groups who have no or limited access to it, for example by installing water fountains in public places or providing alternative supply systems.

Challenges facing Europe

In Europe, water scarcity can be attributed to many factors. With water being an essential component of so many different areas of life and the world, many challenges arise which can be detrimental if not properly addressed.

Success stories

    • Identify unauthorized consumption

      Gaia

In Gaia, Italy, the water utility has 254,000 connections with 3 monitored sectors. Before they started the project with Itron, they were standing at 54% NRW. They were losing 6,000 cubic meters of water monthly. By the end of the project, they were able to reduce their losses by 50% from 6000 cubic meters to 3000 cubic meters bringing their Non-Revenue Water down from 54% to 34% - a 20 % reduction. 20% reduction of water losses

      • Optimize pressure management

        Case Study

The Itron intervention started with the installation of new smart meters and a fixed remote reading network throughout the city to monitor daily consumption and identify abnormal events. The intervention continued with the installation of an optimized pressure management of the water network of one DMA. These actions resulted in a reduction in losses allowing a reduction of 143,000 m3 produced volume in 1 year, this means nearly a quarter of water production. Increased of the network efficiency: from 35% to 69% over three years
